Gallbladder Surgery
By admin | December 28, 2008
Gallbladder surgery is also known as Cholecystectomy. Past gallbladder surgeries removed the gallbladder though long incisions along your stomach, below your ribs.
Today the most practiced type of gallbladder surgery is called Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. This allows for smaller incisions and with the aid of a laparoscope the surgeon can see inside your body to locate the gallbladder.
Gallbladder surgery is usually the last option for gallbladder disease. The surgery removes the entire gallbladder along with any gallstones that may have formed. In order to be able to easily locate your gallbladder, the surgeon inflates your stomach with air.
Once the surgeon places the laparoscope inside, it serves as a small camera that will guide him to your gallbladder. Before removing the gallbladder they take an x-ray of the area to see the layout of the bile vessels.
The surgery only lasts a couple of hours and only general anesthesia is used. As always, there are always associated risks with surgery and side effects as well.
